The importance of retrofit and its role in the journey to Net Zero with Snugg

A recent Climate Change Committee (CCC) report suggests that half of the UK’s homes will need to install heat pump by 2040 if we’re to meet our Net Zero targets. But to do so will require a huge undertaking. 14 million households (that’s around half of all UK homes) would need to participate over the next 15 years.

The challenge is large but so is the opportunity. In the UK, homes account for around 15% of all carbon emissions. And with 80% of homes in 2050 having already been built, retrofitting our existing housing stock is a key part of the process.

At Snugg, we’re tackling this challenge head-on by making home energy improvements simple and accessible for everyone. Our customer-facing digital platform helps homeowners create personalised home improvement plans, identify money-saving grants and connect with qualified installers. Our primary route to market is via partners, with existing relationships in place with TSB, Yorkshire Building Society, Which? and others; bringing our solution to millions of homeowners across the UK.

With the Climate Change Committee estimating that £250 billion will be needed to decarbonise homes by 2050, innovation and cooperation in the private sector are essential. This is why we’re excited to join forces with other influential organisations in the journey to Net Zero at the upcoming Green Finance UK panel discussion.

The panel will include:

We’ll discuss a range of important topics, such as how to overcome common barriers like cost and complexity. We’ll share insights about emerging financial products like green mortgages. And we’ll explore ways to create seamless customer journeys by integrating advice, finance and installers. (Plus much more!)

At Snugg, we’re particularly looking forward to sharing some of our latest innovations, including our Carbon Cashback initiative that helps homeowners earn money by installing green efficiency measures. And we’re looking forward to hearing from the other panellists about their developments and learnings too.

The panel session ‘How do we maximise collaboration to increase the speed of home decarbonisation?’ will take place at Green Finance UK on Thursday 6th March at 9:45. For more information about making your home energy efficient or partnering with Snugg, visit snugg.com

Green Capital, Real Returns: What Are Investors Backing in the UK Energy Sector?

In 2024, community energy projects generated enough clean electricity to power over 212,000 UK households for one year*. Yet scaling these successes to attract institutional capital remains a significant challenge - one that requires understanding where investment is actually flowing and why.
