North Sea Set to Become the World’s Largest Clean Energy Reservoir Under New Plans

On Monday 26 January, history was made when European leaders attending the third Future of the North Seas Summit in Hamburg signed an historic clean energy security agreement, the Hamburg Declaration, to secure 100 GW of joint offshore wind projects.
Built jointly between UK and EU companies, the energy generated from major offshore wind projects in shared waters will be used to power homes and businesses across the continent. This historic pledge puts the focus squarely on clean energy as a way to reduce Europe’s reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets during times of global instability.
Projects will include offshore wind hybrid assets – windfarms at sea that are directly connected to more than one country through interconnectors, allowing the supply of clean power to be redirected to where it is needed most.
Just weeks after we posted the news that the UK had recorded a second wind power record, and headlines reported a record-breaking offshore wind auction, unlocking 7,000 jobs and driving £22 billion of private-sector investment, the news agenda is once again doubling down on clean energy as an opportunity to build stability for the UK and Europe.
Founder and CEO of TSC, Kate Hutchinson, comments: “Once again, clean energy is proving to be more than a power source. Instead, it is being used as an example of resilience and stability through strategic collaboration.
“The Hamburg Declaration not only delivers energy security but also a shared infrastructure and a resistance to fossil fuel markets.
“What’s more, when we consider the industrial opportunities that this agreement presents, we must not underestimate the economic impact it could have through inward investment and jobs.
“Given the UK’s recent announcements in relation to offshore wind, we are perfectly positioned to drive this agenda and to join our partners in Europe to make the North Sea the World’s largest clean energy reservoir.
“Building upon these positive headlines, we must retain this momentum, keeping clean energy firmly on the agenda. Not just in summits but with regional industry leaders, academics and policy makers.
“We must consider how these announcements impact in practice and how any developments or infrastructure requirements can be supported by post industrial communities.
“The agreement has been signed and now the hard work begins. We must make sure that we are leveraging the opportunity this presents, to deliver the best possible results for the UK and Europe.”
With a year-round events programme, TSC provides a platform for national industry leaders, innovators, policymakers and investors dedicated to accelerating the UK’s clean energy transition to come together to discuss the topics that matter most. As just one example, the Clean Energy UK Conference 2026 will take place in Newcastle on 19th November.
Kate continues: “The Clean Energy UK Conference 2026 is the perfect opportunity for us to provide a platform to discuss these latest announcements around wind and how they work in practice. Not only is it an opportunity to share the details but also to develop workstreams that turn talk into action.
“We will update our community with developments as we get closer to the event date. Needless to say, we expect that wind will take centre stage given these recent announcements.”
