Ellie Grimes
Programme Manager, Net Zero North East England

I’m proud to be the Net Zero Programme Manager for Net Zero North East England. I care deeply about creating a future that’s cleaner, fairer, and more resilient, especially for communities here in the North East- my home!
My journey started with a degree in Chemistry from Newcastle University, followed by a Master’s exploring third-generation solar cells-a window into how science can solve real-world energy challenges. I’ve since earned a CIBSE qualification as a Heat Networks Consultant, and built my career around turning policy into action.
At Durham County Council, I managed a team of 11 individuals across 3 multi-disciplinary teams, led capital projects across the county, from rolling out renewable technologies to shaping net zero strategy alongside local stakeholders. These aren’t just technical wins- they help lower bills, improve local infrastructure, and make Durham a better place to live and work.
In my regional role, I help bring organisations together- from local councils to community groups, the private sector to the 3rd sector – to accelerate climate progress.
I’ve hosted workshops, spoken at events, and helped spark partnerships through programmes like Together Towards Net Zero and the Climate Emergency Strategic Board.
What drives me most is working with people who care: engineers, educators, activists, colleagues, and community champions. I love bringing energy and creativity to these spaces, and I’m always up for a good challenge (especially one that makes a real impact)
