The UK alone produces an average of 1.6 million tonnes of e-waste a year, but less than a third of this is recycled – a staggering figure which must be addressed.
Businesses are responsible for a large amount of Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) that ends up in landfill. In the UK, organisations purchase close to half a million electricals including phones, IT, and appliances every year – demonstrating the need to manage these devices securely, safely, and responsibly.
At S2S Group, we are tackling this mounting problem head on, helping businesses to understand the importance of IT recycling and proper asset disposal, to improve their environmental impact.
What is WEEE recycling and why is it important?
WEEE is one of the fastest-growing waste streams on the planet. Because of recent advancements within technology, electronic products are becoming redundant more quickly, meaning they become waste.
The mounting level of e-waste is made up of common business IT equipment which has reached end-of-life and is therefore redundant; items such as computers, batteries, mobile phones, and other miscellaneous assets are often thrown into general waste, adding to the increasing levels of IT equipment disposal.
Many businesses often don’t know what to do with their e-waste or understand the importance of managing its disposal correctly. Through improper disposal and ineffective separation, e-waste typically ends up in landfill where toxic chemicals such as those found in mercury and lead, can seep into the ground, poison the air and contaminate water sources.
It is therefore vital that businesses seek to recycle its e-waste or consider reuse through proper WEEE recycling processes, to reduce their carbon footprint and protect our ecosystems. WEEE recycling refers to the process of collecting, recycling, and recovering valuable materials from redundant electrical and electronic devices. It aims to minimise waste and maximise resource generation, by repurposing IT assets.
How can businesses embrace WEEE recycling?
At S2S Group, we work with businesses to manage their ITAD needs from collection of old IT equipment to recycling and document certification, taking on what can be a complicated process to navigate for you. Our expert team consistently delivers top-level solutions to simplify your complex IT disposal requirements, keeping on top of ever-changing environmental and compliance regulations.
As a registered Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF), S2S Group holds environmental permits for the storage and treatment of Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and is a registered waste carrier, holding quality, environment and information system standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 27001.
We reuse as many assets as possible and recycle the rest through a manual disassembly process that optimises recycling rates by recovering any core materials to be reused in the production of alternative goods and reduces the need for a large processing plant.
Driving forward a circular economy
Through embracing WEEE recycling, businesses can contribute to the circular economy, reducing their own consumption rates by keeping e-waste out of landfill, and improving security of important information through proper data disposal.
S2S Group supports clients to achieve environmental goals through quick, secure and environmentally friendly IT asset disposal and management services. Beyond this, as an organisation we pride ourselves on our sustainability initiatives. We are committed to reaching our goal of becoming a net zero business by 2050 and are one of the only ITAD businesses to produce an annual CSR Report.
In May 2025, we were awarded the EcoVadis Gold Accreditation in recognition of our consistent commitment to sustainability, placing us among the top 5% of companies to be assessed in the last 12 months.
