Let’s Talk Rubbish: New Waste Separation Rules And What UK Businesses Need To Do To Comply

Sunday 11 May

Let’s Talk Rubbish! How the UK’s new ‘simple recycling’ rules will affect your business, and the companies that can make sure you’re not wasting your time or your recyclables!

As of 31 March 2025, new waste management regulations have come into force in England, aimed at streamlining and improving recycling practices within the workplace. Under the updated legislation introduced by the UK Government, all businesses operating in England with more than 10 employees are now legally required to separate dry recyclable materials and food waste from residual, non-recyclable waste.

What This Means for Your Business

These regulations mark a significant shift in how organisations must manage their waste. The informal practice of disposing of all types of waste in a single bin is no longer permissible. Items such as sandwich wrappers, food scraps, and plastic bottles must now be correctly sorted into designated waste streams. Non-compliance could result in enforcement actions, including fines or formal compliance notices.

Legal Requirements

If your organisation meets the employee threshold, you must implement distinct disposal systems for the following waste categories:

  • Dry recyclables: Paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, and glass

  • Food waste

  • Residual waste: Non-recyclable items that do not fall into the above categories

The primary objectives of this regulation are to increase the national recycling rate and to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill or incineration. Recent research by Rubbermaid Commercial Products indicates that only 61% of SMEs across key sectors—such as hospitality, education, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and transport—currently separate waste for recycling. Despite longstanding public awareness campaigns, substantial volumes of recyclable material are still being disposed of incorrectly in commercial settings.

Driving Sustainability Through Standardisation

By mandating uniform waste separation practices across businesses, the government aims to improve both the quality and quantity of recyclable materials, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support a transition to more sustainable operational practices.

Compliance Made Simple

Adapting to these new requirements does not have to disrupt your business. Many organisations are already achieving compliance by collaborating with specialised commercial waste management providers. These partners offer services including:

  • Comprehensive waste audits

  • Colour-coded bin systems and clear signage

  • Staff training for effective waste segregation

  • Scheduled collections for each waste stream

  • Digital tools for tracking recycling performance and compliance

Such support not only facilitates regulatory compliance but also enhances your organisation’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) credentials.

Partnering for Progress

Several of The Sustainability Community’s partner organisations, including industry leaders like SUEZ and Biffa, are actively supporting UK businesses through this transition. These providers offer extensive experience, national reach, and customised recycling solutions.

  • SUEZ UK delivers sector-specific services including audits, training, and digital monitoring tools. Their circular economy focus ensures a commitment to reducing landfill use and promoting long-term sustainability.

  • Biffa supports businesses of all sizes with adaptable collection schedules, a strong emphasis on reuse and recycling, and transparent environmental reporting. Their Zero Waste to Landfill initiative helps clients meet both compliance requirements and broader sustainability targets.

Turning Regulation Into Opportunity

Whether your organisation operates in hospitality, offices, education, or any other sector, the right waste management strategy can turn regulatory challenges into sustainability success. With expert guidance and the right tools, businesses can not only meet compliance requirements but also contribute meaningfully to environmental goals—creating long-term value for both your organisation and the planet.

Waste, innovation and pioneering solutions will be topics covered at our upcoming conference, ReGeneration Earth, happening in Leeds on 18th and 19th June 2025. Secure your tickets today!
